Promoter Frank Warren has jumped to the defence of Tyson Fury over criticism of his status as a pay per view star, listing a host of statistics to back up his claims.
After talks collapsed for him to face Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed world title due to Fury’s purse demands, there have been those who have questioned whether Fury and his teams evaluation is an accurate one.
Speaking to IFL TV, the Queensberry boss was not shy in dismissing the claims.
“Tyson’s fights in the States and the UK drew more than three million subscribers, punters, pay per view buys.
His fight with Dillian Whyte was the highest grossing pay per view in the UK to take place in the UK. It beat Usyk vs Joshua, that’s a fact of life.
Tyson brings a lot of value and people make money from fighting Tyson. It’s like when people go and fight Canelo – they don’t even get 80/20, nowhere near it!”
Boxing fans across the planet sighed in disappointment this week, after the news that, an historic four belt unification between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk would not be next.
With Usyk’s representatives confirming he would look to take care of his mandatory obligations, a fight with young UK heavyweight Daniel Dubois looks set to be next for the masterful Ukrainian.
Dubois holds the WBA Regular title and is next in the rotation of mandatories for the unified world champion.
As for Fury, news broke last night that Queensberry stablemate Joe Joyce is the frontrunner for a summer showdown, provided he gets through his fight with Zhilei Zhang at the CopperBox Arena in just over two weeks’ time.
