Frank Warren knows a thing or two about promoting big events but has a brutal verdict on one legendary contest which he claims was the ‘biggest liberty ever.’
Warren has promoted some of the biggest names in boxing over the years from Mike Tyson to Frank Bruno, and Joe Calzaghe to Ricky Hatton.
He remains a towering presence on the sport and his Queensberry Promotions outfit is right up there with Matchroom as one of the biggest in the world. Soon the two will come head to head in the unique 5 v 5 event scheduled for June in Saudi Arabia.
Before that, he has spent time to watch back some of the biggest fights in the career of his current heavyweight charge Tyson Fury, who has the most important fight of his life moving up on May 18 when he takes on Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed title and all four major world title belts.
Speaking on the Queensbury Promotions YouTube channel, Warren and Fury speak about the first fight with Deontay Wilder which ended in a rather controversial draw after Fury famously rose from the canvas after a heavy knockdown late in the fight.
“I tell you what, I’m going to tell you something about that fight from me. That fight, at the end of it, I was so disappointed about the decision. Everybody was going crazy so you’ve got to try and have a calming incident. That was the biggest liberty. And I know things have come from it, but he won that fight.”
Fury went on to beat Wilder conclusively in two further fights before also defeating the likes of Dillian Whyte and Francis Ngannou on his road to the undisputed.
