After the news over the last week that Errol Spence Jr has triggered a contractual rematch clause for another shot at Terence Crawford, the expectation is that the second fight between the pair will take place up in weight at super welterweight.
The consensus amongst the boxing world is that this will somewhat increase Spence’s chances – even marginally – of exacting revenge over Crawford, who dominated and stopped him to claim the undisputed welterweight world championship on July 29.
However, this is not the view of legendary trainer Freddie Roach, who explained to KO Artist Sports why he feels a rematch taking place at 154lbs could make things even worse for the Texan.
“Yeah, if it’s at 154lbs he [Spence] going to be getting in there with an even bigger puncher. I don’t see a second fight being necessary, because the first fight clearly showed who the better fighter was.”
“Let him get back in the gym, get back to work and get a couple of wins under his belt, then maybe we could see it.”
There has been no news yet on when fans can expect to see Crawford and Spence lock horns again, but it will likely be towards the very back end of the year or in early 2024.
Should Crawford make the result a repeat, he’s targetting another jump in weight to face the winner of Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez and Jermell Charlo this September.
The undefeated switch hitter will not be looking past Spence though, regardless of how their first fight turned out.
