The trainer for the legendary 8-weight world champion, Manny Pacquiao is the renown pupil of Eddie Futch, Freddie Roach.
The idea of Lomachenko vs Pacquiao has been floated around for a while now. It has been disputed by some, yet the rumours still persist.
Roach was very confident when the rumours first emerged. He has now reiterated those sentiments and once again believes that his man would be triumphant in a potential blockbuster clash.
Roach also stated that he still believes Manny Pacquiao should have been declared the victor in his clash with Jeff Horn last summer.
Furthermore, he shared his point of view that despite rapidly approaching the age of 40 Manny Pacquiao still has a lot to offer the world of boxing.
“I thought we won the last fight. Manny is still a very good fighter.”
“He looked really good in training for our last fight.”
Roach says if the option of Vasyl Lomachenko is presented to him, he will advise Pacquiao to take the fight.
“I really like the Lomachenko fight for him. I would take that fight if they offer it. I think Manny beats him.”
Lomachenko has received some criticism for not facing the best opponents in his domain or somewhat smaller fighters.
But how much of that is actually down to competitors being terrified of agreeing to a fight with Lomachenko? It is understandable due to the thorough way ‘Loma’ outclasses and almost shames his opponent.
Freddie Roach also took the opportunity to question the resume of the Ukranian 2-weight world champion.
“I think I got the better guy. Who has Lomachenko really beaten? I really like our chances in that fight,” Roach said.
“Having two jobs is very difficult, being a world champion and being a senator may be a lot for him.”
“Manny has always been a very busy person. He has always been singing or dancing, he has always been a busy person.”
“But being a senator and being a world champion, I think it’s a lot for him these days,” Roach said.
With nothing confirmed yet for Pacquiao’s next fight, The Filipino’s trainer shared that his preference would have been to see Pacquiao once again lock horns with Australia’s Jeff Horn.
“I really wanted him to fight with Horn but I do not think it’s going to happen because he’s going to face Crawford.”
“I think Horn owed us a rematch. I have heard stories where we are going to face Lomachenko and Crawford but there is definitely nobody [finalized].”
I have not heard anything from Manny, I have not heard from Michael Koncz [Pacquiao’s adviser],” Roach concluded.
