Heavyweight boxing icon, George Foreman has picked a current fighter he believes is the most exciting watch in the sport.
Foreman holds the record as the oldest ever heavyweight champion, winning the belt aged 45-years-old in 1994, over twenty years since his first stint as champion, where he defeated Joe Frazier for the unified crown in 1973.
To this day, Foreman is hailed as one of the most devastating punchers the sport has ever seen, with sixty-eight knockout victories in seventy-six wins over the course of a career that lasted almost thirty years.
At 74-years-of-age, Foreman still has a keen interest in the sport and in an interview with Fight Hype, revealed that he enjoys watching Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, declaring him the most exciting boxer in the current scene.
“I just love the sport whenever there is a boxing match coming up and I know the guys are equally matched up, it excites me. Floyd Mayweather, not too long ago, what an exciting journey he has taken us on, but I love the new fighters too.
Canelo, boy, Canelo Alvarez, he has been the most exciting fighter for me.”
Next weekend, Alvarez will defend his undisputed super-middleweight title for the second time, defending all four of his belts against the WBO mandatory challenger, John Ryder, in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The pressure seems to be on Canelo, after a somewhat disappointing 2022, and the Mexican will be looking to silence any doubters questioning if he’s past his best. Canelo’s main aim for 2023 is appears to be a rematch with light heavyweight champion, Dmitry Bivol.
As for Foreman, a new film has been released, telling the story of his life both in the ring and outside of it, “Big George Foreman The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World”.
