Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia have given their words that the winner of their fight will take ‘the whole purse.’
The two undefeated superstars face off on April 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, putting their undefeated records on the line for a 136lb catchweight contest.
They jumped on Instagram live with the fight just days away, and Davis and his hypeman implored Garcia to ‘bet the purse’, to which the Californian replied ‘everything’s already on the line, let’s go.’
There was some confusion as to whether or not this was accepting a wager, but Garcia said it was, and later said ‘let’s do it, I’m down, the whole purse.’ Davis, for his part, looked like he couldn’t believe his luck and got straight on a call to sort out the business side of things. Garcia said they would make a contract and sign it.
It’s reminiscent of the situation between Jake Paul – a friend of Garcia’s – and Tommy Fury, who entertained a presser crowed by shaking hands on a double or nothing bet but didn’t follow through, with Paul claiming his opponent wouldn’t sign on the dotted line to make it official.
Financials aside, the paid then got back into their fight, with Garcia claiming ‘Tank’ had been ‘knocked out cold’ in sparring. He denied it and reiterated what he’s been saying all along – Garcia doesn’t have the skills to compete with him.
The back and forth, which can be watched via Fight Hype, did well to kick start the fight week promotion for what will likely end up one of the most successful fights of 2023.
With the press conference, final weigh-in and fight night to come, boxing fans are in for an exciting good few days.
