Gervonta Davis was on the receiving end of some bad news this week, when a Baltimore judge rejected a plea deal put forward by Davis’ lawyers and ruled the case against him for an alleged 2020 hit-and-run incident must go to trial.
The incident in 2020 left four people with serious injuries and the judge ruled that the deal, which would see ‘Tank’ serve a one year suspended sentence as well 60 days of home arrest, was too lenient and was not representative of sufficient justice for the victims in the case.
As a result, the pay-per-view star could be facing a prison sentence should the two-day trial, scheduled to commence on December 12th, not go in his favour.
One of the victims of the crash, Jyair Smith, is a mother who was also pregnant at the time. Ms Smith claims she directly asked Davis for help before the star fled the scene.
“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis; I looked him in his eyes, I said I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant.
He never once came over to help me. He got his things and left” the scene.”
Needless to say, this is not the sort of fight Davis wanted to see out this year with.
The three-weight world champion has been heavily linked with a huge money fight with Ryan Garcia, with a recent online back and forth between the two stoking excitement amongst fans that a meeting in the ring could be agreed.
However, these recent developments would seem that the Garcia fight – as well as any others – will need to be put very much on the backburner.
