Gervonta Davis has made a bold pay-per-view prediction ahead of his pencilled in fight with Ryan Garcia.
The fight announcement came when boxing fans thought negotiations had once again fallen through. Both fighters broke the news simultaneously, and more of the necessary details followed.
Despite there still being some hurdles – namely a fight for each man in between – the finish line is in sight for a deal that the sport badly needed in amongst other bouts failing and broadcaster disputes.
The date in mind is April 15, the location Las Vegas. It will be produced and distributed by Showtime – ‘Tank’s side – whilst DAZN – Garcia’s side – will also offer the PPV event through its streaming service.
Speaking on the Morning Kombat show, a confident Davis predicted over 1 million ppv buys.
“I think it’s good for the sport, I think it’s definitely good for the sport. Because both of us [are] young. Both of us in our prime. He’s hungry. For sure I’m hungry. Ain’t no other young fighters fighting each other right now. I feel like though this is the start … I think this is the start of 135 top fighters fighting each other.
“I don’t think the boxing world knows yet, like how big it really is. Probably more [than a million pay-per-view buys].”
Should the prediction be accurate, Davis and Garcia would join the likes of Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather – ‘Tank’s promoter until recently – in the 1 million club.
Both men are undoubtedly draws for fans. The young and undefeated fighters have huge followings across social media and are known to fill out arenas – particularly Davis for the latter. It doesn’t hurt that they have 44 knockouts between them and that the fight is seen by many as a pick ’em.
To reach that sacred number, however, the fight has to happen. ‘Tank’ has a fight with another Garcia – Hector Luis – on January 7 in Washington. It’s said that ‘KingRy’ is finalising his interim fight, too, the strong rumours being that it will be Mercito Gesta on January 21.
