Bill Haney, father of newly-crowned WBC Super-Lightweight Champion Devin, has slammed Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis for reportedly turning down a mammoth offer to face his son.
Haney comfortably defeated Regis Prograis earlier this month and, ever since, his name has been linked to a hotly-anticipated showdown with Davis, who is expected to fight for the WBA Lightweight Title in early 2024, or even be upgraded from his position as the WBA Regular Title-Holder.
Haney senior was clear that he wanted to lure ‘Tank’ away from 135, but said on social media that he has turned down an offer of $20 million guaranteed.
“He done turned down twenty-million bro, twenty-million? You done turned down twenty-million guaranteed. Twenty-million, bro, twenty-million guaranteed, are you serious bro?”
Davis then responded, confirming he would indeed turn down that offer, but claimed that Haney wasn’t really in talks.
“You still listening to that old sad n***a? Bill can’t even reach the n***a he need to talk to, but for sure I’m turning down 20 mill guaranteed.”
Eddie Hearn, who promoted Haney’s win over Prograis, has also weighed-in on and seemingly confirmed the rumours of Davis’ refusal to fight in a separate interview with Fight Hub, where he added that ‘Tank’ didn’t want to discuss terms.
“Yeah. I mean, we want to speak to Gervonta Davis. I reached out to him because we’ve got some huge offers for him. Bill knows those numbers and we’ve got offers from around the world to stage that fight. Unfortunately Gervonta didn’t want to discuss them but we’ll move on and see what’s next and hopefully that fight can be made in the future.”
For now at least, it seems that the chances of seeing Davis as Haney’s next opponent are minimal. Instead, ‘The Dream’ is being linked to bouts against his fellow 140lb champions, mainly Subriel Matias who Bill Haney claims to have demanded $4 million to fight.
