The reigning unified WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO world middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler caught up with Fino Boxing to give an update on the negotiations for part II of the Golovkin – Canelo saga, which is now really seeming to drag on.
“I’ve been working with Eric Gomez behind the scenes for a long time,” Loeffler said to Fino Boxing in talking about the negotiations for the Canelo-Golovkin rematch.
Loeffler shared that ‘GGG’ is still incensed by the decision of their first fight on September 16th.
There’s no denying the fighting spirit. After successfully defending his Middleweight Championship twice in 2017, @GGGboxing was named fighter of the year by the @WBCBoxing. Loeffler acknowledged that bitter taste or the sense of injustice has been the driving force behind the overwhelming desire for a rematch.
“GGG was disappointed with the decision. That’s what really gives the momentum for the rematch to happen.”
Additionally, Loeffler says negotiations will likely follow Golovkin’s return from his homeland of Kazakhstan, where they will able to once again trash out a few of the lingering details.
“If he can make the rematch, that’s what the fans are waiting for.”
“We’re waiting for Triple G to get back from Kazakhstan.”
“Hopefully, when he gets back, I’ll sit down with Eric to iron out these last few points to get both sides to agree.”
“The event was overshadowed by some of the scoring,” Loeffler said.

Loeffler also paid tribute to WBO world middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders for his masterful and emphatic display against the hard-punching Canadian David Lemieux.
Loeffler also said that Golovkin has always wanted that fight against Lemieux. Furthermore, Loeffler says if the Canelo rematch doesn’t come off, Saunders will be a target on top of their hitlist.
“Saunders had a great victory over David Lemieux. He’s the last champion that Golovkin hasn’t fought, and the last title that is missing from his undisputed status, and Gennady has always wanted to fight him.”
“I would say if the Canelo fight doesn’t happen for whatever reason. Then the unification fight against Saunders would make a lot of sense, but there are a lot of good fights in the middleweight division.”
Lastly, Loeffler shared that both Canelo and Golovkin need one another in order to secure another mammoth payday.
He also says they can only stage a middleweight mega-event if they agree to clash against each other.
@RealMiguelCotto , good luck in your last fight my friend, too bad we never fought when you had the WBC 160 Pound title. pic.twitter.com/WbHBqNjOXN

Canelo needs Triple G for the mega-event. The same thing with Triple G needs Canelo for the mega-event,” Loeffler added.
“You’re always concerned with the judging. I think it comes down to the judges and not necessarily the location.”
“If the fight happens, it’ll be May 5th.”
“By far, Canelo made his biggest payday fight against Triple G, and by far, Triple G made his biggest payday fight against Canelo. I think both sides have an interest to get it done,” said Loeffler.
