The undefeated world middleweight kingpin, Gennady Golovkin saw his very lucrative rematch with Mexican PPV attraction, Saul Canelo Alvarez fall through. The former 2-weight world champion, Canelo failed two drug tests and testing positive for Clenbuterol on February 17 and February 20th.
Golovkin has been critical of Canelo and his ‘contaminated meat’ excuses. The two fighters have become embroiled in a war of words following the situation.
But that hasn’t diminished the Kazakh’s appetite to scrap with Canelo once more and provide a conclusive ending to their ongoing saga.
Golovkin wants to ensure fans see an outright winner following an inconclusive first fight in September last year.
Golovkin also stated that he feels the Canelo rematch is his most lucrative option.

“[The rematch with Canelo] is the biggest fight in the world, the one with the greatest benefit (economically) for the fighters and everyone involved.
“I’m ready for that date, if the fight is made,” Golovkin said in a conference call carried with the Mexican press and the World Boxing Council.
“Canelo is the priority and that is what he aims for, [to fight in] September.”
Golovkin also acknowledged some fans want to see the best middleweight in the division take on challenges from Jermall Charlo and Billy Joe Saunders. The Kazakh put them on notice by mentioning them by name.

“I understand that there are also other fighters like Jermall Charlo and Billy Joe Saunders.”
“But I am focused on the fight on May 5 and then we’ll see what happens with Alvarez.”
“Everyone wants that fight, everyone knows that and I am ready for September.”
After Canelo’s suspension, then Golovkin scrambled at late notice to set up a matchup with Armenia’s Vanes Martirosyan.
That fight takes place on May 5, at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Analysing the matchup, Golovkin said of his fight with Martirosyan. “Martirosyan is a different boxer, he is taller and has a different style than Canelo, but I am prepared to give a great show.
“To give the public what they want to see, and they will see a Golovkin with the Mexican style.”
