The build-up to Canelo Alvarez-Gennadiy Golovkin 3 has been heated but very much from one side.
In recent weeks both men engaged in a two city press conference trip where each had their say and saw the Mexican not mincing his words about his opponent.
The Undisputed Super Middleweight champion has used foul language to describe how he feels towards his rival who has conducted himself in more gentlemanly fashion.
In an interview with Boxing Scene Golovkin was asked about the change in the relationship between himself and Canelo and what he thought the causes were:
“I don’t even know how to explain it.”
“Maybe it’s just the side effects of certain substances in the body.”
“But I treat it as a sporting event, nothing personal. But the words that he chooses to say are unexplainable. Inexplicable.”
Golovkin seems to be referring to Canelo’s six-month ban in April 2018 after failing two drug tests earlier that year. The Kazakh has brought up the matter in previous interviews which has clearly annoyed the four-weight world champion.
Their two fights to date have ended in a controversial split draw and a majority decision win for Canelo. The rubber match takes place on September 17 at the same site as the first two, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Earlier this week leading Fighter of the Year candidate Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez was announced for the co-main event.
