Canelo Alvarez has had plenty to say about his next opponent and old rival Gennadiy Golovkin ahead of their September 17 trilogy bout.
The Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion has been vocal about what he really thinks about the Kazakh, but Golovkin decided to keep his emotions in check during recent press conferences for their third fight.
Having already fought each other twice the Mexican is well versed to give an opinion on how hard Golovkin hits after 24 rounds against him. The current Unified Middleweight Champion has 37 wins inside the distance from his 43-fight record, yet Canelo compared the 40-year-old’s power to that of Dmitry Bivol.
The WBA Light Heavyweight Champion beat Alvarez back in May on points but is not noted for ending fights inside the distance. The Russian’s last stoppage came four years ago against Sullivan Barrera.
Golovkin was asked by FightHype what he thought about those latest comments from Canelo and in true ‘Big Drama Show’ style his attack was deadly. Through a translator he said:
“I fought Canelo at 160 and I could say he was a faster puncher, he delivered faster combinations.”
“I wouldn’t say those were power punches, knockout punches.”
“It’s clean shots that brought no result.”
“Of course he’s in a different weight class right now but him saying he can go to 190lbs and beat Usyk – come on get back to reality.”
Golovkin was then given an opportunity to share his own opinion on what he thought of Canelo as a person. However, rather than launch a verbal tirade he decided to have some fun with the question.
“Your question does not have any emotions on my part. I didn’t even think about him, like him or not like him.”
“He’s not a good-looking girl! I have a wife; I love my wife I think about her not him.”
