On September 16th, the world awaited a definitive answer to the question of who is the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the world.
Instead of determining supremacy in the middleweight division; the fans were left with yet more uncertainty following the decision to declare the fight a draw.
Eyebrows were raised at the scoring in particular judge Adelaide Byrd’s 118-110 score in favour of Canelo. The other scorecards read for a much closer verdict. One being scored 114-114 and the last scorecard reading a 115-113 score, in favour of Golovkin.

Over the past weekend, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s promoter, the former 6-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya caught up with TMZ. De La Hoya seemed to confirm that the much-anticipated rematch will happen and furthermore suggested that the fight is likely to fall on the Mexican holiday ‘Cinco De Mayo’.
Golovkin, however, is not jumping the gun and has suggested that he is not convinced Canelo truly wants the rematch.
“I do not know if there will be the second fight – we should ask [Canelo]. I’m ready, I have my championships, I’ll be ready for May,” said Golovkin said to ESPN Deportes.
“I was surprised that he said he beat me, because he did not beat me. I do not think he felt comfortable in the ring,” Golovkin added.
“Sometimes the fights are more difficult, in fact I think the first one was good, but the second will be a lot more interesting.”

Golovkin amassed a streak of 23 consecutive knockouts, 18 of those knockouts coming in world middleweight title fights.
Golovkin refuses to predict a knockout ending in the rematch. But he does expect another gruelling contest.
“I feel like I won the first fight and I’m not going to say I’m going to knock him out – because this is a tough sport, and I think it will be a tough fight for both of us,” Golovkin concluded.
