Golovkin’s boxing coach Abel Sanchez has claimed a Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor fight would “hurt” boxing – then claimed Mayweather would say the criticism is “racist”.
Talks are believed to be continuing for a £100million mega-fight between the undefeated Mayweather and UFC two-weight world champ McGregor.
McGregor has come out and said that he is confident his boxing skills will be enough to knockout Mayweather – who has never lost a fight and dominated boxing until his retirement in 2015.
But Sanchez believes the prospect of putting “an amateur” into the ring with a boxing great is “an insult to fight fans”.
Abel Sanchez said:
“That’s bad for the sport of boxing because if that fight happens, Mayweather will be facing an amateur. McGregor is an amateur in the boxing game, it would be the same thing as when Ronda Rousey faced Holly Holm. Holly Holm had 39 professional boxing matches, there’s a difference in the sport.”
“If McGregor and Floyd were going to fight in an MMA fight, then of course you would lean the other way. If it’s going to be a boxing match, it’s an insult to the fans to have that fight happen.”
