Rival 115lbs champions Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada will return to action in October ahead of a projected unification clash in 2021.
Gonzalez and Estrada fought way back in November 2012 when then-WBA light-flyweight champion Chocolatito, from Nicaragua, prevailed on the cards in Los Angeles.
Mexican Estrada has been campaigning for a rematch ever since and it seems he will get his wish should the duo negotiate title defences on a planned Matchroom USA show in late October.
According to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, WBC super-flyweight champion Estrada (40-3, 27 KOs) will face compatriot and former foe Carlos Cuadras (39-3-1, 27 KOs) and WBA Super 115lbs champion Gonzalez (49-2, 41 KOs) will meet Mexican Israel Gonzalez (25-3, 11 KOs) on October 23.
Stiff-punching WBC flyweight king Julio Cesar Martinez (16-1, 12 KOs and 1 NC) will also be in action on the show against fellow Mexican Maximino Flores (25-4-2, 17 KOs and 2 NC). The event is likely to take place in Mexico City with no fans in attendance.
The winners of the two 115lbs title fights have agreed to fight in February or March 2021, according to Coppinger. Most hope that road will lead to Gonzalez-Estrada II.
