Two-weight world champion Devin Haney has confirmed that word of negotiations between him and Ryan Garcia ‘are facts.’
This potential match-up first surfaced as a possibility when Garcia posted a message on social media saying ‘I’ve advised my team to contact team Haney to discuss and make the fight happen between Devin and I.’
It was something of a surprise call out from Garcia having already being linked to a fight with WBA champion Rolando Romero after his eighth-round knockout win over Oscar Duarte on December 2, but now Haney has replied.
‘The Dream’ is coming off his own hugely impressive victory this month having scored a shut-out points win over Regis Prograis to claim a world title in a second division at his first time of asking.
Haney has responded to ‘King Ry’s call out saying to confirm that negotiations are underway.
“These are facts..”
He has also spoken to the MMA Hour to confirm.
“That’s something we’re talking about. We’re in negotiations with Oscar [de la Hoya], Ryan’s team, so it could be what’s next.”
De La Hoya and Garcia have had their disagreements recently and that was put to Haney.
“I don’t know, I don’t get into personals. It’s business at the end of the day. It’s all about money. This is a big money fight for Ryan’s side, De La Hoya’s side and my side as well. If it makes dollars it makes sense.”
He was asked whether the fight would be promoted by Matchroom.
“Yeah, we gotta see. We’re still in the beginning stage of negotiations so we’ve got to see, but definitely Matchroom are part of the team for sure.”
Garcia and Haney would represent a great fight for both men going into 2024 should Haney be able to get an exception to his WBC mandatory obligations.
