Now that Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia have officially announced their fight, the undisputed lightweight champion, Devin Haney, has listed the key attributes that each man will bring to the ring.
Following some stumbling in negotiations, the ‘Tank’ versus Garcia fight has been signed and confirmed.
A joint promotional effort between PBC and Golden Boy will see one of the biggest and most intriguing contests of the year fought at a catchweight of 136lb somewhere in Las Vegas.
One man who will have a keen eye on proceedings is Haney, who has long been linked with a fight against both men, and will certainly have a target on his back in the winner’s eyes.
Speaking to iD Boxing, he said that the ‘safe bet’ was on Davis.
“I think it’s a good fight Ryan has the height, the speed, the length, all that. But Tank has that IQ, that experience, that power. So I mean the safe bet is Tank, but you cannot sleep on Ryan, he definitely can punch – he’s shown that.
We don’t know, we’ve gotta see.”
With 45 knockouts between them, not many fans or pundits see the bout going the distance, and either Garcia or Davis – both in their fighting prime – will leave the ring with their undefeated record snatched away.
Despite being some pounds lower than the lightweight limit, it’s widely expected that the winner of the fight could pursue Haney and a shot at his four belts.
‘The Dream’ must keep hold of them though – no mean feat given that he has an elite Ukrainian in Vasily Lomachenko knocking at his door. The pair are pencilled in to fight in May.
