“I don’t think there’s a cruiserweight in the world that beats him.”
The words of Lawrence Okolie’s promoter Eddie Hearn who was in euphoric mood on Saturday night.
Okolie took on Krzysztof Glowacki for the vacant WBO cruiserweight title and comprehensively beat the veteran Pole ending the fight in round six with a right hand.
The world title is the culmination of years of hard work for Okolie but this is just the beginning for the 28-year-old Londoner.
As thing stand on the world cruiserweight scene Okolie joins Ring magazine and IBF champion Mairis Briedis, WBC champion Ilunga Makabu and WBA champion Arsen Goulamirian as one of the four belt holders.
“I know they’re tough fights but how do you beat Lawrence Okolie?” Hearn told Boxing Social looking at what is next for ‘The Sauce’.
“I’m sure Briedis would hang around for another big fight.”
Hearn revealed that Okolie’s trainer, Shane McGuigan (who also trained Anthony Fowler and Chris Billam-Smith to victory on the night) told him that Briedis is there for the taking and to go after the number one gut in the division.
On the domestic scene Hearn added that he hopes to make Tommy McCarthy v Chris Billam-Smith as the first defence of the Irishman’s European cruiserweight title which he won by majority decision against Bilal Laggoune last October.
