Last week, WBC heavyweight king Tyson Fury claimed he wouldn’t fight in the UK again, but Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has reiterated that both champions would still rather clash at Wembley.
With the UK and most of the world still gripped by uncertainty due to the rampage of the Covid-19 Pandemic, a location has yet to be decided for the undisputed world heavyweight championship fight – with Saudi Arabia and America perhaps emerging as the two frontrunners.
In normal times, the mega-fight between rival British champions would naturally take place at the national stadium in north west London but current restrictions have made that impossible. With some sense of normality three months away, Hearn says that gambling on a Fury vs Joshua bout at Wembley would be risky business.
“Of course, both fighters would prefer for this fight to take place in the UK in June or July,” Hearn told ‘The Ak & Barak Show’ on DAZN and SiriusXM. “We’ve been told by the government here that June 21, life returns back to normal. But to hedge your bets on 100,000 in Wembley at the end of June/early July, that’s a ballsy move.
“[Joshua] just wants to get his hands on Tyson Fury, to be honest with you. He’s been training since the [Kubrat] Pulev fight with one man on his mind. He just wants to get in the ring with him and take his belts from him. He’d do it anywhere, honestly. He’s relaxed. He just wants to fight, he wants it so bad.”
