Ronnie Davies is planning to lift the lid on life with the Eubanks in a book.
Davies has trained both father and son over the last 30 years and is currently in the gym with Jr as he prepares to challenge George Groves for his WBA super-middleweight championship at a sold-out Manchester Arena on Saturday, February 17.
The fight will be screened live on ITV Box Office and the winner will meet either Callum Smith or Juergen Braehmer in the final of the World Boxing Super Series.
Davies is currently looking for a ghost writer for a book that is sure to be a revealing insight into a charismatic and eccentric fighting family.
Davies has previously told ‘Boxing News’ the Eubanks are “not normal” – and many have heard plenty of crazy stories about them over the years.
Former sparring partners of Eubank sr remember him – Cancelling sparring because he decided to fly to New York on Concorde for a day’s shopping.
Flying up to Scotland for a training camp, deciding the hills were perfect for cycling and so telephoning his then wife to send his bicycle in the post
Stopping sparring to answer the telephone. He has been an eccentric coach and mentor to his son as well.
Ringsiders noticed Eubank jr jumping up through the gears in an early-career fight after his father tapped his cane on the floor three times – and when Eubank sr made his debut in his son’s corner, for the fight with Stepan Horvath in Newcastle in June, 2014, he didn’t say a word to him in between rounds ! He just looked at him for the full minute, explaining afterwards that the revision had been done and there was no need for talking during the exam !
Bobby Rimmer Tweeted that Eubank sr’s actions made “a mockery” of boxing. Eubank jr’s revision in the gym includes brutal sparring sessions.
He was widely criticised for posting footage of him laying out novice Tey Lynn-Jones on Instagram – and according to others, Eubank goes into every spar looking for a knockout.
Davies has apparently had to pull Eubank off some sparring partners – and once sparring is over, he’s been known to show contempt for those he’s been beating up.
“I tried to talk to him after sparring,” said one ex-pro, “and he didn’t want to know. I’ve never known arrogance like it.
“But he’s some fighter.”
Davies apparently said at the outset of his pro career that Eubank jr had the potential to be better than his father and given that Eubank sr had more world-title fights – 24 – than any other British fighter, that is a huge vote of confidence.
Eubank sr has said his son would “put the sex appeal back into boxing” – and just like his father, he’s a showman.
He’s fond of looking into the crowd and engaging with them during fights and against Dmitriy Chudinov, Eubank stood in front of him for around half a minute during the sixth round with his hands by his sides – and Chudinov couldn’t hit him !
Only Billy Joe Saunders, on a majority points vote, has beaten him in 27 pro fights and if you regard the IBO as a genuine world title, Eubank jr’s stoppage of Renold Quinlan in February means the Eubanks are only the sixth father and son in boxing history to both win world titles.
The others are Floyd Patterson and Tracy Harris Patterson (Tracy Harris was adopted), Guty Espadas and Guty Espadas jr, Leon Spinks and Corey Spinks, Julio Cesar Chavez and Julio Cesar Chavez jr and Wilfredo Vazquez and Wilfredo Vasquez jr.
