Super-lightweight star Jack Catterall won his much-anticipated grudge match with Josh Taylor in impressive fashion on Saturday night and has his eyes now on a fight against a shock opponent.
This rematch had long been on the cards ever since Catterall feels he was robbed of becoming undisputed super lightweight king when he wasn’t given the points decision when the two first met more than two years ago. It was a close fight but many believed Catterall did enough, especially as he secured a knockdown.
The rematch was a long time coming with injuries and Taylor taking other fights in the meantime meaning that Catterall had to wait it out, and did so with a solid win over Jorge Linares.
Now, fresh off his unanimous points victory in Leeds last weekend which the judges scored as 117-111, 117-111, 116-113, he has called out his next opponent by replying to a post on X by Ryan Garcia with a simple statement.
“I want to fight you next 🤝”
He then added a second reply to Garcia making it clear he is interested in the showdown.
“Any weight @RyanGarcia feels good at I’ll beat him at”
Garcia is currently unable to box as he fights to clear his name following two failed drug tests before and after his recent win over super lightweight champion Devin Haney.
Speaking to TalkSport recently, Catterall claimed he is ready for whatever comes next.
“I’m excited, I put a lot of pressure on myself to win on Saturday and I never look past my opponents. I’m in a great position now, a lot of good fights to be made, a lot of good fights at 140lbs. I think I made it clear on Saturday that I’d love to fight Teofimo Lopez.
“That’s a fight that whets my appetite and that’s a big fight for the WBO world title. I’ll have a bit of rest now, bit of recovery, spend some time with the family. But I’m just eager to get back in there.”
He also gave Taylor his dues.
“He’s a tremendous fighter, former undisputed world champion, and we expected a tough fight. But we stuck to what we knew, stuck to the game plan.
“I always believed in my heart of hearts I could beat him and it was just a case of getting that opportunity and what an opportunity it was. It was just amazing.”
A fight against either Garcia or Lopez would be a huge test for Catterall but after waiting so long to settle the score with Taylor he is keen to now move on to the next level.
