Matchroom Boxing have successfully won a recent purse bid for their most recent new signing Jaron Ennis, and have now revealed which opponent the talented welterweight world champion will be fighting, and on what date.
Ennis currently boasts a record of 31 wins and no losses and has knocked out 28 of his opponents to date. He is a rising star of the sport who is making his first defence of his 147-pound title.
The 26-year-old Philadelphian recently inked a multi-fight deal with Matchroom after previously featuring exclusively on Showtime and now that he is aligned with a major promoter, he is aiming to become a big draw in Philadelphia, a famous boxing city steeped that is steeped in fighting tradition and is longing for marquee matchups.
Ennis himself hasn’t competed in Philadelphia since November 2018 when he was a highly touted prospect. Rated No. 3 by ESPN in the welterweight division, Ennis was elevated to champion in November following the stripping of Terence Crawford’s belt after he unified the division against Errol Spence Jnr and became an undisputed champion
With Crawford and Spence moving up to the 154-pound division, Ennis is poised to seize control of the welterweight class and his promoter Hearn has expressed his desire for Ennis to pursue his own unification fights in the division.
The protracted negotiations between Ennis and Cody Crowley finally concluded after numerous delays and postponements. Initially ordered by the IBF, negotiations for the contest were slated to commence on January 31. However, deadlines for reaching an agreement passed on March 1 and again on the 19th without resolution.
Subsequently, a further deadline set for March 26 was also abandoned after TGB Promotions notified the IBF that “both sides reached an agreement” for the fight, though ultimately no agreement was made.
It was revealed this week that Matchroom Boxing secured yesterday’s purse bid for the Ennis-Crowley IBF welterweight title fight with a bid of $3.9 million. TGB Promotions, representing Crowley with an 85-15 split, bid $2 million.
According to Hearn, this bout is scheduled for July at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center. Ennis, nicknamed “Boots,” is set to earn $3,315,000, while Crowley would pocket $585,000 if the fight proceeds as planned.
In a video shared on X by Matchroom, Hearn broke the news.
“There’s been a month of negotiation previously, purse bids called, and we won it, so bringing ‘Boots’ home to Philadelphia, a massive show incoming for Jaron Ennis, in Philadelphia in July, time to bring this super-star home to his home city. Absolutely over the moon to deliver this for Jaron.”
Hearn confirmed an announcement about the exact date will follow soon.
