Despite Floyd Mayweather’s lack of MMA experience and being over 40 years of age, there are great boxing minds who have argued for a Mayweather victory against Conor McGregor inside the UFC cage should the two ever meet in a rematch.
Last week notable boxing coach Robert Garcia spoke his mind on the matter and told that with Floyd’s skillset anything is possible.
This week Jeff Mayweather, boxing trainer and Floyd’s uncle, gave his take on the potential bout and just like Garcia, the older Mayweather believes ‘Money’ has a shot to cause an upset.
“Conor has a massive advantage over him but still Floyd has a chance. He has a chance because, first of all, he is way faster than Conor. He is way more elusive than Conor and he punches harder than Conor,” explained Mayweather in an interview with Mayweather Boxing Channel.
The key thing for Floyd is movement according to his uncle.
“The same way he [Floyd] whupped his [Conor] a** in boxing, the same way he’ll whup his a** in MMA. It’s not about no f*cking shoulder roll, it’s about Floyd using his legs, being smart,” he explained.
However, Mayweather does bring up the fact that McGregor has a lot more tools in his arsenal in a cage than in a ring. Floyd’s chances of winning are slim.
“Don’t get me wrong of course if Floyd gets kicked, get elbowed, get kneed, anything like that of course chances are he’s going to lose. I’m a realist. I’m not here to tell you ‘Floyd’s gonna do this, Floyd’s gonna do that’, but I know this – If Floyd uses legs [Movement], he gives himself a chance. He keeps it in striking distance.
“If Floyd gets taken down the fight’s going to be over,” he said.
When asked about if he thinks the fight will happen, here’s what Jeff Mayweather had to say.
“I have no idea. You never know with Floyd because sometimes Floyd is keeping himself relevant and stay out there in the press and in the media.
“Everytime body is waiting to see what’s he going to do but at the end of the day I can’t really say what Floyd’s gonna do because he’s done things that I never thought he would do.
“There’s a chance it could happen,” he concluded.
