Jermall Charlo has suffered a major new blow that features big career implications after it was revealed that he was arrested this week in Texas.
Charlo was arrested and charged with three misdemeanours. One was for driving while intoxicated, one for fleeing the scene of an accident, and one for eluding police, as reported by Pearland Police Department public information officer Chad Rogers per an article on ESPN.
Reports from TMZ say that Charlo has since been released on a $9,500 surety bond and that his blood alcohol content was over 0.15 when the legal limit is .08.
Around 6:41 pm on Monday, Charlo found himself in a collision with another vehicle while driving his red Lamborghini, as reported by the police.
Following the crash, a verbal altercation ensued, prompting Charlo to depart the scene rather than await police arrival. After identifying his location, an officer approached Charlo in a marked vehicle with lights flashing.
Charlo, the only person in his vehicle, continued driving for about a mile while being trailed by an officer. Eventually, another officer positioned their vehicle in front of Charlo as he tried to proceed through a red light, compelling him to halt.
Charlo’s attorney, Kent Schaffer, told TMZ that there were no drugs involved and that neither Charlo now anyone else involved in the crash was seriously injured.
“Jermall has been in training. He has not been using any type of drugs. “We are optimistic that there will be a good solution.”
In a statement on Tuesday posted to social media, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman offered support.
“The WBC has provided and will continue to do as much as possible to support Jermall Charlo during his difficult times with regards to mental wellness.”
For a while now, Sulaiman has been under pressure to strip Charlo of his title and finally caved last week when his WBC middleweight title was taken off him due to inactivity – he hasn’t defended it since June 2021.
In the light of the arrest, WBC interim champion Carlos Adames has been upgraded to full world champion, with the WBC explaining further in their statement that they will look to rank Charlo in a different weight.
“The WBC will closely work with PBC in securing the best course of action to attend to Jermall’s needs at this moment. After a thorough evaluation of the situation and understanding of the facts and times the WBC may rank Jermall at super middleweight.”
Charlo’s last outing was a points win over Jose Benavidez Jr. in November, his first contest in 29 months and now maybe his last for a while while he sorts out this charge sheet.
