It was a revealing weekend in the super welterweight division this past weekend. The undefeated Jarrett Hurd unified the WBA and IBF world titles at 154 lbs against the Cuban slickster, Erislandy Lara.
It was an epic fight of the year contender where the action culminated with a left hook knockdown of Lara in the final round.

The verdict on the fight was very split with many believing the decision could have swung either way. The scorecards echoed that as the decision was split.
Following that fight, Hurd set his sights on locking horns with WBC super welterweight champion, Jermell Charlo.
Charlo who is close friend and stablemate of Lara’s and that is why a fight between them never materialised.
“Lara and me are friends,” Charlo began.
We trained together but we would have done it because of the business,” Charlo told ESPN.
Charlo says he prefers fighting for the unified title this way, preferring to lock horns with Hurd as opposed to Lara.
“Me fighting Lara would have created turmoil, so I’m glad it went in this direction.”

“I’ll fight whatever fight I have to and he’ll fight whatever fight he has to.”
But now he’s out of the way and me and Hurd, it’s a mega fight in our division. I’m like, ‘Let’s go!’
“Hurd puts on entertaining fights, I put on entertaining fights. Let’s bang it out, let’s rumble. I’m not a little 154-pounder (like Lara is).
I’m six-feet tall, I’m strong, I’m thick.
He’s strong, he’s thick. Let’s give the fans a great fight. That’s my thing. I’m proud of Hurd. He did what he had to do,” Charlo said.
“Hurd was very respectful to me. He’s cool. They respect the ‘Lion’ but Hurd don’t know what he got coming,” Charlo said.
The lighter Charlo twin is next planned to be in the ring on June 9th when he will take on Austin Trout. Charlo however, said that he’d be ready and more willing to take on Hurd on that date.
And honestly it ain’t no beef between me and any of the guys fighting.. I’m just spectating so please don’t step on my toes.. cuz I fold the foe tho..

“I’d rather fight Hurd right away but I’m fighting June 9. I’d rather fight in the main event. That would be the best thing.”
“But I will be ready for Trout and then I will be ready for Hurd. It’s like it’s been a tournament and me and Hurd is the final for all those belts.”
“I am going to be so ready. My life is solid, I’m training hard, always working. I’m super pumped up for the Hurd fight.”
