Jermell Charlo has weighed in on twin brother Jermall and the issues that have kept the WBC middleweight world champion out of the ring for over two years.
‘Mall had been deep in talks for a career high pay day against undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, before outside of the ring issues forced him to withdraw for talks and his brother stepped in to save the show.
Prior to that, the 33-year-old had a hand injury before an extended hiatus due to mental health issues.
In a recent interview with The Last Stand podcast, ‘Iron Man’ has weighed in on his sibling’s struggles, and blamed the company he has chose to surround himself with.
“I think that he [Jermall] has just surrounded himself with some of the wrong people. I think also, when you live off of something that makes you have to bounce back, go ahead and bounce back and fight for that every day, let that be your fight.”
“If anything’s wrong with him, it’s that he’s become content with having the issue rather than fixing the issue. I think my brother, it’s about who you surround yourself with and who’s there in your ear, trying to push to get better and get off of that level where you’re at, and put you back where you need to be.”
Jermall has recently linked up with Roy Jones Jr, who is focused on turning the champion ‘back into a monster.’ The WBC has touted a fight date soon for him to defend his 160lbs title.
As tough as it may be, Jermell will have to put his brother’s trials to the back of his mind and focus on his fast approaching showdown with Alvarez, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena on September 30th.
Charlo will jump up two whole weight classes for the fight, which is widely regarded as the toughest test of his career thus far.
