News emerged last week that Joe Joyce missed out on a fight with Martin Bakole in order to instead take on Derek Chisora and now Bakole’s trainer has slammed the British heavyweight.
Joyce and Bakole have some recent history of disagreement after falling out over leaked sparring footage. Back in March Glasgow-based boxer Bakole leaked a video showing him getting the better of 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Joyce. He did so with the caption ‘this is the reason why UK heavyweights are avoiding me guys’ and now that seems to have rung true.
At the time, Joyce’s former manager Sam Jones responded with a video of Bakole throwing up into a bucket during the session and added ‘next time don’t be a Jackanory posting sparring highlights @MartinBakole01’.
Since then Joyce has bounced back from his two losses to Chinese heavyweight Zhilei Zhang with a win over fellow British boxer Kash Ali and is now set to face another Brit in Chisora in July.
‘Del Boy’ was last out back in August 2023 when he secured a decision victory over American Gerald Washington. The 40-year-old Chisora has a record of 34-13 (23 KOs) including bouts with the likes of Tyson Fury three times, Carlos Takam, Oleksandr Usyk, Dillian Whyte twice and many more.
Ahead of those two coming to blows, Bakole’s trainer Billy Nelson has had his say on the matter via Boxing Social.
“Martin was offered the fight three weeks before they announced Derek against Joe, We were under the impression we were fighting Joyce and as far as I know two days before they decided they didn’t want to fight Martin anymore. The purse was agreed, the date was agreed, 27th July, and then Big Joe’s arse fell out.”
Nelson was then asked if Bakole would fight Dillian Whyte.
“Martin told Dillain Whyte he would gladly fight him 12 months ago but nothing, not a dickie bird.”
Then Joe Parker.
“Anytime. Joe’s words not mine, he will never fight Martin Bakole.”
He was then asked if he would fight Anthony Joshua.
“They know my number. You wouldn’t fight Martin in the position he is in.”
For now, Bakole is once again out in the cold waiting for his chance to shine having last been out on the Day of Reckoning Card with a win over Carlos Takam.
