John Fury has hinted that, on behalf of his son, he’ll be demanding a much closer purse split should he rematch Jake Paul.
Tommy Fury and Paul fought at a 185lb catchweight in Saudi Arabia – a spectacle side show from the sport that was an undeniable commercial success and mixed the world of celebrity with boxing.
Whilst exact purses haven’t been disclosed, the American – who lost the bout via split decision – has boasted of earning up to $30 million. Fury was well-compensated, but, by all accounts, not to such a level.
Speaking to Boxing Social via Freebets.com, his father and trainer was asked if the ‘slight’ gap in purses would be closed come the rematch, which Paul is likely to activate via the contract terms.
“Slightly is an understatement, isn’t it? No, we know what we’re getting into, you know. In my money, we were underpaid, we know that, but we’re in the position now.
We’re in the driving seat, and we’re going to have to have deep pockets and long arms next time, aren’t we?”
Fury’s comments suggest he’ll be angling for the lion’s share when the pair run it back.
As for being underpaid, the trainer and father refers to the split in favour of Jake Paul rather than the reported seven figures his son received for the eight-rounder.
On the rematch, Fury played down reports that it would be taking place in July of this year, although didn’t rule it out entirely.
“It depends on what they want to do, but at the moment, Tommy’s put a hard training camp in. We spent 10 weeks in camps, one, two months ready. So, you know, it’s probably going to be later on in the year.
I’ve not spoke to people connected to us either, you know, so I think Jake Paul’s having a rest, just like we are, and his team and his people, we’ll be on it in due course. We’ve not spoken about anything yet.”
There are other options out there for Paul, including many former UFC stars who’d like to get the payday that comes with facing the successful YouTuber.
Still, the general fan consensus is, if he wants to call himself a professional boxer, he should take the second fight with Fury.
