John Fury, father of the Heavyweight Champion of the World, has criticised Jake Paul’s choice of opponents.
His other son, Tommy, is much more green in the sport. He boasts an undefeated record of eight fights with eight wins, and has been scheduled to face the controversial Paul twice now, with both events falling through due to either injury or travel issues on Fury’s part.
With Paul’s victory over 47-year-old MMA legend, Anderson Silva, talk of the fight has come around once more. On the subject, John Fury, Tommy’s father and trainer, is confident in what his son would day. He started off by ripping into Paul’s choice of opposition, as captured by DAZN.
“If any of my sons was 50-year-old and they was doing that I’d say ‘listen, have a day off, give your head a wobble.’ All you’re going to do is make a fool out of yourself and it’s entertainment for other people. You’re making the other man what’s useless look good.”
“Jake Paul can’t fight. He’ll [Tommy Fury] knock Jake Paul out with one punch. And I’ll say it now on camera – Jake Paul will get knocked out by the first right hand he throws. And I’ll put money on it. This man he’s fighting here [Paul Bamba] – at least he’s a proper fighter. He’s trained as a boxer … and he’s had seven pro fights against proper opposition. Not some hand-picked geriatrics what need Zimmer frames getting in the ring.”
Given Paul’s polarising nature, fans will either agree or disagree with Fury here. On one hand, people will say that the record of any boxer starting out are against relatively uninspired opponents. On the other, Paul doubters continue to claim that, until he faces someone who pays the bills from boxing, he shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Hopefully that will change soon, with a match-up between the two being discussed once more. The fight would be a great measuring stick for both men to see where they are and, more importantly, where they might go.
First up, Fury has to deal with Bamba on November 13 in Dubai.
