John Fury has weighed in with his opinion on a potential clash between son Tyson and WBO Interim world champion Joe Joyce.
Joyce has emerged as the frontrunner for Fury’s next outing, after the disappointing news last week that an undisputed fight with unified world champion Oleksandr Usyk would not be next.
Despite many in the trade offering the view that a meeting with Joyce is a solid option, the Fury family patriarch is not of the same view, describing the fight as “meaningless” when speaking to The Metro this week.
“How do you get yourself up for that? Joe Joyce doesn’t have any belts.”
“He’s an interim champion and of course he deserves his shot at the title. But when you are gearing up to fight for undisputed and then you’ve got to go back to the drawing board and starting again, it is the question of getting up for it.”
“He wanted to be undisputed and now that is not happening. I think his head is all over the place with it. With boxing in general, to be fair. It is only my opinion but to fight Joe Joyce at this stage of the game is meaningless.”
“No one is interested in that. No one is interested in Joe Joyce, no one is interested in Joshua anymore, no one is interested in anything other than the undisputed bout.”
A fight between Fury and Joyce is an easy one to make in principle, with both men signed to Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions.
‘The Juggernaut’, however, has more pressing matters at hand, as he must get through dangerous Chinese southpaw Zhilei Zhang in two weeks’ time, or talk of a world title shot will be redundant.
