John Fury has spoken out about the recent collapse in negotiations for an undisputed heavyweight world title fight between son Tyson and Oleksandr Uysk.
Boxing fans across the globe were left bitterly disappointed when, after months of talks, news broke last week that an historic four belt unification between Fury and Usyk would not happening next.
Speaking to The Metro via freebets, ‘Big John’ had some choice words for both Queensberry boss Frank Warren and Usyk’s long time promoter Alex Krassyuk about the collapse.
“I’m confused, the country is confused, the world is confused. But the only ones not confused are the handlers. The promoters. They always seem to put a spanner in the works. But we are where we are. If it is meant to be, it will happen.”
“Absolutely promoters should have done more. There is so much behind the scenes that fighters don’t see. Frank Warren and this Ukrainian promoter, they didn’t look too upset with each other, did they? They were the best of friends. What they have been planning behind closed doors, God knows. But Tyson gets the flack for it.”
Despite the consensus being that Fury is responsible for the death of the fight, Krassyuk revealed last night it was actually Team Usyk who made the decision to withdraw from talks.
Three belt champion Usyk is now expected to look to fulfil his mandatory obligations, potentially starting with WBA Regular belt holder Daniel Dubois.
As for Fury, reports emerged over the weekend that Queensberry stablemate Joe Joyce is the frontrunner for a summer showdown, provided he gets through his fight with Zhilei Zhang at the CopperBox Arena in just over two weeks’ time.
