Former undisputed super lightweight champion, Josh Taylor, has had his say on the prime versus prime contest between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia.
The two young fighters, both undefeated and with star power aplenty, have crossed promotional and broadcast barriers to face off in a 136lb catchweight contest on April 22.
Landing in Las Vegas, the bout represents what’s best about boxing, and has fans, pundits and fighters discussing how it might play out.
Taylor – who will be going stateside himself soon to defend his WBO world title against Teofimo Lopez – told Boxing Social that he has ‘Tank’ Davis winning, and proceeded to list the myriad of ways he believes he’s better than Garcia.
“I see Tank winning that one. I just think better boxing brain, better boxing ability, more power, cuter in the way he moves and better boxing IQ.
I don’t know about him stopping Garcia, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does but I’m going to maybe go for Tank on points.”
The Scot’s pick for the winner sides with the oddsmakers and most of fans, however not many are predicting that it goes the distance.
Davis and Garcia have 45 knockouts between them in 51 fights, and it’s easy to see either man having success with their game plans.
‘Tank’s known to start slow and time his opponent for highlight reel stoppages, often coming in on a counter with the devastating final shot. If Garcia’s defence is something that needs work as many believe, it could spell danger.
In the other corner, Garcia has some of the quickest hands in the sport, and he can capitalise on that slow start as well as his size advantage by producing some of those trademark left hooks early.
However, if Taylor’s tentative pick for a distance fight is right, nobody will complain. Priced at over $80 for PPV in the US, fans will want to see as much action as they can.
