Josh Warrington has weighed in on the repeat or revenge debate for Mauricio Lara’s rematch against Leigh Wood.
Wood heads straight back into the ring with the Mexican dangerman having lost his WBA World Featherweight title to him in February.
The Nottingham man was boxing well in his hometown, catching Lara and not getting involved in too man back and forth exchanges with the bonafide big puncher.
That all changed in the seventh, when the pair traded left hooks and Lara’s landed much sweeter. Wood was dropped and staggered, and the towel ultimately came in.
Warrington, who knows the power of the Mexican well after being stopped by him back in 2021, told Boxing Social that it looked like Wood was cruising to victory in the first bout.
“[In the first fight] I thought Wood was well in control. He had that second round when he got caught in a bit of a fire fight and he took one or two, but yeah, I thought he was cruising, and Lara seemed to be getting desperate, he took a few rib ticklers – but the man’s gonna be very confident now.”
However, the two-time world champion believes that it will be another stoppage win for Lara and heartbreak for Wood in his hometown.
“I really do think it’s gonna be the same result.”
“He’s always believed in his power, but he knows he can put Leigh down with one of them and all he’s got to do is time that one. You look at Gervonta Davis the other week … He hardly throws anything does Davis, he can be so patient, but he knows if he just brings it once it’s enough to do the damage.”
“Lara’s gonna have that same mentality going into it.”
The pair fight on May 27, with all of the action broadcast on DAZN.
