Josh Warrington has been chasing hard to secure his next fight but has now revealed one shock contest that was close but fell through.
Warrington was last out against Leigh Wood back in October. He was boxing well and up on the cards until he got caught in dramatic fashion and stopped somewhat controversially.
Speaking to Boxing Social, Warrington was asked for an update and revealed he was set to face a man who has previously beaten him.
“Well, I feel like we were meant to announce the fight maybe 10 days ago for fighting here in Leeds against a certain former opponent from Mexico and I feel like everything was there and then it just collapsed.”
Warrington was asked to confirm if that man was Mauricio Lara.
“Yeah. I’m getting frustrated man, I’ve been sat about, I had an operation November time, I was back in the gym at Christmas time, obviously, we were talking about the City Ground, back in January, that fell through, we were looking at alternatives.
“Obviously, I’m stepping up weights, put a bit of size on, I’m moving up, we even talked about the 5 v 5 thing, and Nick Ball got talked about, But I’m not going to make featherweight any more, so I’m focusing on super feather, Leigh Wood, but whatever, can’t happen for this reason, can’t happen for that reason.
“OK get me a fight with someone else, they say they get me a fight with Lara, then it doesn’t get over the line and it doesn’t happen. They don’t go into the ins and outs so I don’t know.”
He was asked which of the two he would prefer.
“Wood, because we both speak English, both from the same neck of the woods. I don’t like Lara, but equally the same with Leigh Wood, he speaks a lot of b*****ks. He’s said all these things in interviews, then I got in front of him in Manchester and he bottled it.
“I don’t like either one of them, it’s not for show. I hope we’re close [to signing my next fight], because I’m losing the will. I go to the gym and kill myself and sacrifice myself but there has to be an end product. Sparring and stuff, I don’t need to be taking punches to the head for no reason.”
Warrington and Wood have previously traded verbal barbs in Manchester but it is in the ring that fans really want to see these two Brits come together.
