The legendary Mexican warrior, Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1) who earlier this month announced his retirement from the squared circle.
He was last in the ring in May 2014. However, a series of injuries and disputes with potential opponents hindered Marquez’s plans to climb between those ropes, one last time.
The 4-weight world champion, nicknamed ‘Dinamita’ has since, taken an opportunity to reflect on his stellar career with particular focus being paid toward his four-fight saga with the legendary Manny Pacquiao.
“I have boxing in my blood. My dad was a fighter and I started fighting since I was 6 years old.
“It’s a sport that starts from the bottom, for people with economic needs. Although my parents always put food on the table,” Marquez started by saying.
This sport, essentially, was because of my father’s inheritance,” Marquez added, explaining how his circumstances forced him into exploring avenues to better his quality of life.
“When I was robbed in the third fight with Manny Pacquiao [is what sticks out most in my mind when I think about my career].”
“I was focused, I trained very hard. I (had) a great desire to win. The judges did their job badly, and everyone noticed.”
“Too bad it’s a sad memory. I do not wish it on any fighter,” Marquez said, reflecting on his third fight with ‘The Pacman’.
Reflecting on his career as a whole, Marquez expressed gratitude for how his career mapped out.
“Despite what I told you, my whole career is a happy memory, it was worth the suffering and training.”
On a final note, Marquez reflected on the keystone moment of his career, when he scored one of the most emphatic kayos of all time in his fourth and final meeting with Pacquiao.
“In addition to that knockout of Manny Pacquiao, [it was very important] because he was the best pound for pound fighter in the world, who had devastated all of his opponents and to end our fight series that way was phenomenal.”
