Katie Taylor has her homecoming sorted, with fellow undefeated, undisputed champion, Chantelle Cameron, taking her place in the other corner.
Taylor’s May 20 bout at Dublin’s 3 Arena – the first time she would fight in Ireland as a professional – was thrown into doubt recently when it was revealed her opponent, Amanda Serrano, had picked up injuries in her last outing.
Whilst word from promoter, Eddie Hearn, was initially that they would wait and see the extent of the Puerto Rican’s recovery, Taylor – who hold all the belts at lightweight – had other ideas. She called out Cameron.
“Let’s get it done Eddie Hearn, this homecoming has waited long enough! 3 Arena Dublin is available so let’s give Ireland a night to remember on May 20th. Let’s go Chantelle Cameron, happy to move up in weight for the opportunity to become a two weight Undisputed champ.”
Cameron quickly accepted.
“I’m more than happy to accept!! Like you, I only want to fight the best. I’m not difficult to deal with so this fight can be signed, sealed and delivered in 24 hours.”
The fight will see Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) step up in weight to 140lb and challenge for Cameron’s (17-0, 8 KOs) undisputed crown. It’s believed that, result dependant, Taylor will attempt to make her rematch with Serrano at a later date, perhaps at Dublin stadium, Croke Park.
Credited by many as the spark that ignited women’s boxing, Taylor is an Olympic Gold Medalist. She met Cameron in the amateur ranks too, beating her in the semi-final of the 2011 EU Championships in Poland.
The fight was announced at Matchroom and DAZN’s Liverpool show, headlined by Diego Pacheco and Jack Cullen, and will land on the streaming service as part of the monthly subscription price.
