‘The Special One’ Kell Brook has shared that he came within touching distance of a fight with Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto. Additionally, Kell has shared that he would have ‘loved’ a fight against Cotto; a man Brook brandished a “warrior”.
“We came pretty close,” Brook said in an exclusive with Sky Sports. “I left it to Eddie [Hearn] but I know that we were in talks and everything else, I know that we were very close with it, but for one thing or another, it didn’t happen.”
Kell shared that he felt boxing was really deprived of a great matchup “I would have loved that fight. I think the fans would have loved that fight.”
Expanding on how he feels, Brook shared “Miguel Cotto is a serious warrior. He’s entertained us for years and I would have loved to have shared the ring with him.”
Cotto makes his farewell to the sport of boxing, this upcoming weekend. Cotto will defend the WBO world jr middleweight title that he won in a one-sided 12 round drubbing of Yoshihiro Kamegai. He takes on Sadam Ali in Madison Square Garden.
Touching on his own plans moving forwards, Brook has shared that is his intention to take a tune-up bout first when he begins his campaign as a jr middleweight.
“I think I’ll have a meaningful fight, a comeback fight, a warm-up fight, and then we’ll be looking at jumping back on the high horse for a world title,” said the ‘Special One.’
The jr middleweight division boasts stellar champions such as Erislandy Lara, Jermell Charlo and Jarrett Hurd, to name a handful. Sizing up the competition coming up on the horizon for Brook, he added “They are all very good fighters, they’re all world champions, they’re all talented fighters. Once I come back with a win, and my confidence is up there again, I’ll be looking at those names.”
