Everyone in the boxing world has an opinion about this weekends blockbuster fight that is Gennady Golovkin versus Canelo Alvarez.
The majority are picking Golovkin to win the fight but there are people who have strong faith in the Mexican superstar. One of such is Golovkin’s former opponent, Kell Brook, who lost to the Kazakh in 2016 via technical knockout.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Brook explained why he thinks Alvarez can win and also explained why Golovkin is fading away from his prime.
“You’re only good as your last fight and I just think his days are numbered. We’ve seen the best of him and I think people actually know – and this is a big factor – he is just human. Most of the fighters he fought were beaten before they were hit,” said Brook.
The former welterweight champion is fairly confident that the current version of Golovkin can be defeated with the right game plan.
“Now they know he is human. He can be hit and he can be out-boxed, he can be beaten and top fighters are going to go in with that mentality. As long as they have trained properly and believe in themselves, they will beat this guy at middleweight
Brook and Golovkin had an entertaining fight where both fighters traded punches but eventually, it was ‘Special K’ who got the worst of it. Still, he believes that because of him, the world now knows how to dethrone the middleweight king.
“I still think I showed a blueprint on how to beat Golovkin and it was touch-and-go if he won the fight with Jacobs. He is there to get hit Golovkin, you can hit him and he [Canelo] carries more power is bigger than I probably was when I moved up at the time,” told Brook.
So how is Canelo going to beat Golovkin?
“I just feel Canelo can win this fight if he sticks to a gameplan and boxes the right fight – it’s just how Canelo copes with how Golovkin cuts the ring down as well as his big punching power. He’s got the power, he’s got the movement, he’s got the boxing brain, he’s Mexican, he uses the ring very well, so if he doesn’t get caught early and tries to exchange, he will stick to whatever gameplan they chose,” said Brook.
Brook emphasises on the fact that Canelo needs to move a lot of and use distance to perfection.
“The gameplan is definitely going to box this guy and distance I would say exchange at times but get on your bike a lot of the time until the second half of the fight. That’s what I would tell Canelo,” summarised Brook.
Brook himself is on a two fight losing streak. After his loss to Golovkin, he tried to defend his title against rising welterweight star Erroll Spence Jr, but it wasn’t Brook’s night and the IBF title changed hands after Spence’s 11th round KO victory.
According to multiple reports, Brook is eyeing a November or December return to the ring. As always, there have been talks of him fighting Amir Khan, but that if we are to believe Khan, that fight is not even close to happening.
