Liam Smith had his say on one of the biggest fights the heavyweight division has to offer.
Whilst the man from Liverpool is gearing up for his own domestic box office event against Chris Eubank Jr, there’s another that will be forever be discussed by UK fans until it happens – Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua.
Despite a very public breakdown of negotiations towards the end of 2022, Smith told Sky Sports that he’s confident the fight still happens in the future.
“Yeah it could happen. They’re still both young heavyweights. It’s got to happen. It might not happen next or in the next six to eight months but it will happen.”
As for who wins, Smith sides with Fury. The current WBC champion’s record remains with zero losses, whilst Joshua has racked up three in the most recent stage of his campaign.
He believes that ‘AJ’ can be beaten mentally – something that ‘The Gypsy King’ claims to excel at.
“It’s a great fight for the British public but you’d have to go with Fury. He doesn’t know how to lose. He’s psychologically so strong. Joshua has mental vulnerabilities and Tyson could probably beat him before he stepped into the ring to be honest with you.”
Despite the intrigue, the fight doesn’t look close. Fury is moving towards an undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk – the man who took Joshua’s unified titles – and has said on a few occasions that ‘AJ’ doesn’t feature in his future plans.
Joshua, following the two losses to Usyk, is looking for a statement year to remind fans and fighters alike that he’s still a danger in the division. An opponent is expected to be announced soon, with former Fury foe, Otto Wallin, an option.
