Vasiliy Lomachenko has revealed how he scored his controversial undisputed world title fight with Devin Haney a couple of weeks ago.
Despite many observers of the opinion that Lomachenko had done enough to capture Haney’s WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight titles, ‘The Dream’ retained the belts via unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
As well as telling ESNews how he scored the contest, ‘Loma’ also explained why he feels his chances of getting a rematch are slim to none.
“My score was 8-4, but of course it is subjective, it could be close to 7-5.”
“I’m happy because a lot of people who understand boxing, who love boxing and respect boxing, they have given me this fight, they have given me this win.”
“I think it [a rematch] will never happen. It should happen, but it will never happen because I think they are scared – in fact I don’t think, I’m sure.”
“He understands he lost the fight, his father understands what happened. You all saw what he said after nine rounds in the corner.
It instead now looks likely that Top Rank will try to match Haney against the unbeaten Shakur Stevenson, if ‘The Dream’ decides to stay at 135lbs and defend his undisputed title.
Stevenson entered the ring after Haney’s victory on Saturday night, and made no secret about the fact he thought his countryman was a touch fortunate to get the decision.
It is also a possibility will move up to light welterweight, having made no secret of the fact that the cut down to 135lbs is a difficult one for him.
