Luis Alberto Lopez claimed the biggest win of his career last weekend, defeating Josh Warrington in his backyard and earning the IBF featherweight world title.
Despite the victory, Lopez is angry with ‘The Leeds Warrior’ for his ‘dirty’ antics during the fight.
The Mexican won a tight contest by majority decision, securing a first world title of his career. He was cut by a clash of heads early, which threatened to bring the fight to a close before it had really got going. He had dialogue with the referee throughout about further use of the head on Warrington’s part – something the now-champion claims wasn’t accidental.
Warrington has been involved in a number of head clashes, most notably in his rematch against Mauricio Lara, where the fight was called off after just two rounds as a consequence.
In Warrington’s next fight he won back his IBF world title from veteran Kiko Martinez. After the fight, the Spaniard shared a photo showing his injuries as a result of the same issue above.
Lopez told Izquierdazo that he would never give a ‘dirty fighter’ like Warrington a rematch.
“No, I never would. He is a very dirty fighter. He doesn’t deserve to be in pro boxing. With his fighting style, he can cause an accident to other boxers. He shouldn’t be allowed in boxing.”
Whilst boxing legend, Carl Froch, claimed that ‘no one will give Warrington a voluntary defence’ due to his style of fighting, things may be looking okay for the Leeds fighter.
Following the defeat, it seems that his promoter Eddie Hearn’s plans haven’t changed much, recently stating that Warrington may still get a shot at the winner of Leigh Wood versus Lara should that fight be made in early 2023.
With or without a belt on the line, Warrington is a ticket seller and will likely bring his loyal fans wherever he goes – and a domestic clash with Wood would be particularly intriguing.
