The recent announcement of Canelo Alvarez fighting Jermell Charlo as opposed to twin brother Jermall sent shockwaves across the boxing world, as many thought a bout with the latter was a done deal.
The Charlo brothers are both amongst the finest fighters the USA have to offer, with Jermell holding all four titles at light middleweight and Jermall the WBC world champion in the weight class above.
Austin Trout knows the pair better than most, having went twelve rounds with both and, unfortunately from a Trout perspective, coming up short on both occasions.
In a recent interview with FightHype, Trout explained that despite being the smaller of the pair, 154lbs kingpin Jermall was actually the harder puncher.
“Jermell had more snap and more explosiveness – that right hand came fast! Jermall was more body strong, I tried to move him around and he wasn’t budging, he’ll pick you up and take you across the ring.”
He will need all that power and everything else in his extensive toolkit if Charlo is to emerge victorious when he takes on ‘Canelo,’ with the fight taking place on September 30th in Las Vegas.
The historic contest will be the first in which two reigning undisputed champions have locked horns in the four belt era, and has been positively received amongst the majority of boxing fans.
Although Charlo will have to jump up two weight classes to super middleweight, he and Canelo were once both in the same weight category and there is a sense that there may not be as big a size differential as one would initially expect.
