Boxing fans may be waiting a while if they hope to see Gervonta Davis in with the likes of Devin Haney or Shakur Stevenson.
Stevenson, the current unified Super Featherweight champion, looks set to join ‘Tank’ at 135lbs where Haney sits as the Undisputed king of the division.
Haney, Davis, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Ryan Garcia, George Kambosos and possibly Stevenson make up a high calibre half dozen that could create a number of marquee events.
Floyd Mayweather, who still promotes Davis despite their apparent recent differences, says Tank doesn’t need them.
The Hall of Famer talked to FightHype about Davis and said his protégé will keep doing what he has been already.
“Shakur Stevenson, a hell of a fighter. Devin Haney, a hell of a fighter. But guess what? If Top Rank has Devin Haney and they got Shakur Stevenson, then they need to fight each other. Don’t worry about Tank.”
“Everybody, saying Tank not doing this or that and Tank don’t have this belt well guess what if that’s true, don’t worry about Tank. Let Tank keep doing what Tank doing. As long as Tank with Floyd and Al [Haymon] Tank will always look good. He’s gonna be okay.”
“Shakur and Devin, I love both of them. But if Top Rank feel like they have the top fighters then guess what if y’all got the top fighters then y’all make the top fights. And Shakur know my line is open he can call me any time. Devin knows my line open he can call me any time.”
Mayweather went on to talk about fighter pay:
“One thing that I’m not gonna do is lie to those fighters.”
“I can’t say how much money these fighters are making, that’s not my business. But I do know one thing Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is getting paid like a motherf****r. That’s what I do know.”
Davis last fought on May 28 at Barclays Centre, Brooklyn when he stopped loudmouth rival Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in six rounds. The undefeated WBA ‘Regular’ title holder has been called out by Ryan Garcia since then on several occasions. ‘KingRy’ faces Javier Fortuna this Saturday night at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
