Floyd Mayweather is known for praising himself more than anyone else, however he gave some props to an up and coming American fighters in a recent interview.
Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis’ name comes up continuously amongst the best prospects in the sport, however Mayweather still believes the 26 year old is not spoke of enough.
In this clip shared by BoxingLife, Mayweather implores other fighters not to “sleep” on Ennis.
“There are so many young fighters that are up and coming that we don’t talk about. I’ll come on record and say that kid ‘Boots’ Ennis, don’t sleep on him.”
“I’ll tell these other fighters, don’t. He’s a hell of a fighter. I feel like he don’t get the credit that he deserves. We talk about a lot of fighters at welterweight, but we don’t talk about him. And I think that he’s going to be a problem.”
Despite Mayweather’s claims, Ennis is viewed unanimously amongst the boxing fraternity as a world champion in waiting, and put in another very impressive performance against Romain Villa this past weekend.
With his IBF interim welterweight strap on the line, Ennis dominated Villa from the opening bell, right up until he secured the 28th stoppage of his career in round ten.
Fans on social media have been fawning over the virtuoso showing from ‘Boots,’ who landed every shot in the book against the tough but ultimately overmatched Colombian.
The resurgence of the Ennis hype train will no doubt be at the pleasure of his backers at PBC, particularly given that many observers felt his last showing, a decision victory against Karen Chukhadzian, was an underwhelming one.
Ennis will have more than one eye on the undisputed welterweight world title fight between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr, which takes place on July 29th at the T-Mobile Arena.
