Floyd Mayweather’s tenth round TKO victory over Conor McGregor didn’t come as a shock especially after the Irishman started to fade away in the sixth round.
It became evident that it was only a matter of time before Floyd would hammer the final nail. Referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight after the fluent combination by Floyd in the tenth, but McGregor says it was an early stoppage and he could have continued on fighting till the final bell.
The Irishman’s biggest argument was that he didn’t get dropped to the floor during the canvas.
“I would have liked the ref to let me keep going. I was a little fatigued, but let me go down, let’s see how things play out. There’s a lot on the line here, let me keep going. He had a lot more experience and I have to give it to him, that’s what 50 pro fights will give you. Being wobbly and fatigued, that’s energy, that’s not damage, I’m clear headed,” he said.
McGregor said he had enough in him to go do the distance and complained about the stoppage.
“Hopefully I entertained the fans, I thought it was close, I just thought the stoppage was a bit early, I often get like that. Where were the final two rounds? Let me at least wobble back to the corner and try to recompose myself,” told McGregor.
“I’ve been strangled on live TV before and came back.”
After the fight, the Nevada State Athletic Commission gave McGregor a two month medical suspension. It’s likely that the Irishman will return to the UFC after the suspension and defend his lightweight championship.
