News broke yesterday that Mike Tyson had been involved in something of a medical scare and now the almost 58-year-old has broken his silence about the events.
Tyson has not been far from headlines in recent months given that he is set to take part in a controversial bout with YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul, despite there being the best part of 30 years in age difference between the two combatants.
The fight is set to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in July as part of Netflix’s first ever live boxing broadcast, but many people fear for the safety of Tyson given his age and deteriorating health.
He has not fought competitively since back-to-back losses at the end of his career almost 20 years ago, although he did take part in an exhibition with Roy Jones Jr back in 2020 which ended in a draw.
Paul, meanwhile, is still in the early part of his career and might well be best known for taking a loss against Tommy Fury, though has won his last two bouts via first round knockout.
This fight will be fully licensed and appear on both men’s official boxing records, with no head guards and 14 oz gloves being worn for the eight two-minute round contest.
This incident was said to be an episode of nausea and dizziness due to an ulcer flare-up while on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Monday. The first reports were that it delayed take-off although Tyson’s representatives later denied this and claimed that the two-hour delay was down to an air conditioning issue on the aircraft.
In a simple but defiant message posted on X, Tyson confirmed he is now OK.
“Now feeling 100% even though I don’t need to be to beat Jake Paul.”
The undercard of this fight features a thrilling rematch between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor who first fought in New York at Madison Square Garden with Taylor narrowly coming out on top. All four of the major super-lightweight belts will be on the line.
