Mike Tyson has named the division he feels should have a tournament to crown a true king – and it’s not the heavyweights.
There has been talk of a huge four man fight series in Saudi Arabia towards the end of the year, consisting of Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk.
Speaking on his podcast Hotboxin’, ‘Iron Mike’ said he’d love to see a similar idea put together that would see all the best lightweights in the world square off.
“I always thought they should have a lightweight unification tournament. They can’t avoid each other, everyone has to fight, all the champions, all the top contenders – they’re in this tournament.”
Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis will fight at a catchweight of 136lbs – one lb above the lightweight limit – this Saturday night, in what is by far and away the highlight of the boxing calendar for this year so far.
Then, a matter of weeks later, Devin Haney will defend his undisputed lightweight world title against the legendary Vasiliy Lomachenko at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
With the recent addition of prodigal talent Shakur Stevenson to the division as well, there are arguably few better weight categories in the sport, and a tournament like Tyson described would spring up some of the best fights in all of boxing.
It was confirmed this week by numerous sources that early talks are in place for a historic four mean heavyweight bonanza in Saudi Arabia in December, with the remarkable goal of hosting Joshua vs Wilder and Fury vs Usyk on the same night.
