Just weeks ahead of his controversial contest with Jake Paul, Mike Tyson has had an incident that adds further worry to the event.
Tyson will be 58 in June, and he is set to fight Paul, the YouTuber turned boxer who is still in his late twenties, on July 20 in Dallas. Tyson has not had a sanctioned fight since June 2005, which he lost, though he did have an exhibition with Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020 and fought to a draw.
The news of this episode first surfaced via In Touch Weekly who suggested the former heavyweight champion of the world had an ‘apparent medical scare’ before a source added more details.
“Mike had some kind of medical emergency on the plane and paramedics boarded. Before the paramedics arrived the flight issued an announcement asking for a doctor — the message even came on everyone’s screens.“
Representatives of Tyson gave updates to the New York Post about the incident.
“Thankfully Mr. Tyson is doing great. He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing. He is appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him.”
Passengers were delayed because of the incident and one of them explained what happened.
“He was in first class, but we were in an exit row and the stewardess was very chatty. They asked us to stay on the plane and landed so paramedics could enter. She said something like, ‘He’s a really important passenger so we wanna make sure he’s OK.’ I knew it was him, but I just mouthed the words ‘Mike Tyson’ and she nodded her head yes.”
Speaking about his upcoming opponent, Tyson has been fairly dismissive.
“He couldn’t even knock out [Nate] Diaz. Diaz is 40 pounds. He’s going to knock me out? Anderson Silva. He couldn’t even knock out the little guys, how’s he going to knock me out? .. He never knocked out a real man, come on. He didn’t knock out Tommy Fury. I’m going to f**k Jake up.”
The fight will be shown live on Netflix with Katie Taylor versus Amanda Serrano in a fine rematch as the chief support on the undercard.
