Heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma is poised for a pivotal stretch in 2026, as momentum continues to build behind one of the division’s fastest-rising contenders.
As first reported by Ariel Helwani, Itauma is set to headline a July 25 event at London’s O2 Arena a career milestone that will mark his first time topping a bill in the UK capital. An opponent has yet to be confirmed, though the bout is expected to represent a step up in competition.
Since turning professional in 2023, Itauma has compiled 14 victories, accelerating into the title picture with notable wins over Demsey McKean, Mike Balogun, Dillian Whyte and most recently Jermaine Franklin Jr., whom he stopped in five rounds last month.
Following that performance, promoter Frank Warren outlined a roadmap that includes a July return and a potential world title opportunity before the end of the calendar year.
Several sanctioning body routes remain in play. Within the WBA structure, circumstances surrounding unified champion Oleksandr Usyk including the possibility of a vacancy could impact the status of current WBA “Regular” titleholder Murat Gassiev. The IBF picture is also fluid, with contenders such as Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jr. positioned in the mix.
However, Itauma’s standing with the WBO may present the most immediate path. Speaking to ThaBoxingVoice, WBO president Gustavo Olivieri confirmed he will recommend Itauma be installed as the organization’s mandatory challenger at heavyweight, following his recent win over Franklin.
“In light of Moses’ recent victory, against a well-rated contender in Franklin, I will formally recommend that he be designated as the mandatory challenger of the heavyweight division in the WBO,” Olivieri said. “If they vote, which I presume and expect that that is going to be the vote, Moses will be designated as the mandatory.”
Olivieri added that the timing of any mandatory enforcement remains under discussion and could be determined after the upcoming bout between Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois.
Wardley, who shares a gym with Itauma, has previously indicated that a potential clash between the two would only be considered under specific circumstances. Should he prevail, Itauma is expected to explore alternative title routes. If Dubois is victorious, the pathway for enforcing a WBO mandatory position would become more straightforward.
Further details regarding Itauma’s July assignment are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
